From Africa with Love

listening faces

Mimi and I are now settling into our summer rhythms in Kenya.  As always, a couple of weeks are needed to slow my mind down and to think more thoroughly about … everything.  This summer, I am teaching an advanced Greek reading class at the Kenya Baptist Theological College.  Our Greek classroom is full, with several auditing the class in hopes of learning more.  What a treat to be back with young African Christians!  Our days are very full - I’m lecturing 4 hours a day, 5 days a week now.  Afternoons include grading and preparing to feed our group the following day’s material….

As you understand, our living conditions are challenging, which takes much out of Mimi’s day.  She is helping in the KBTC’s library a few hours a day and working in our living quarters trying to keep us healthy.  To date, the weather has been unkind - as it has been wet and windy.  We had some sunshine today, which is our means of heat, so, we are most grateful for a breath of warmer air up here in the altitude of Limuru.

Coming back to Africa reunites us with the loving family of faith God continues to surround us with and continues to grow.  Our African brothers and sisters have beautifully loved us back home.  I am reminded why it is that Mimi and I so dearly love to be here trying to help.  We are so wonderfully loved….

May God continue to show you his great love for you.

Love,

Jamie

Dear Mimi and Jamie, You are in my prayers daily as I praise God for what He has birthed in your hearts in a willingness to give all for His kingdom. You are bringing glory to Him as you train Kenyan nationals and as you disciple and train American students to hear Him, yield to Him and join Him in what He is doing in the world today. Blessings to you and peace. Health and healing to you both. I look forward to hearing about the great things God is doing in and through you. Blessings in the Lord Jesus, Deborah

My time in Kenya (so far) can be characterized nicely by an encounter that I had just last night. I was on my way across the beautiful KBTC campus to eat dinner and then go to bed, as I was very tired after six hours of class. On the way, there was a Kenyan man walking in the same direction and, as is custom in Kenya, we shook hands and greeted. He informed me of his name, Onesmus, and told me that he had just arrived in order to graduate the next day at the large ceremony KBTC would be ...

It began in ‘baby Hebrew' class, singing the 133rd psalm and being captivated by Jamie's stories of joy and life of a different kind. It continued in Kenya with a summer long practicum with another people, experiencing rich community in ways that left us permanently changed. That joy and that life continues to haunt us, to challenge us, and to bless us, even today. Psalm 133 was sung in anticipation of communal worship to the King. It is about how good and how marvelous life is when we ...
