The Kenyan PeoplePrayer Request
January 3, 2008 Mimi and I returned to Houston last weekend and have been heartbroken over current events in Kenya ever since. We are in Houston and safe, but desire to be with our loved ones in Kenya - like never before! Kenyans have met the new year with violence that Mimi and I never even imagined possible. Since independence, Kenya has always been a safe haven for refugees from surrounding countries. Never did we dream that Kenyans would become refugees in their own country and be forced to flee to surrounding Uganda, Tanzania, and Sudan. Hundreds have been murdered, estimates of over 100,000 people have fled the country, millions of dollars worth of property has been destroyed, and the hatred rages out of control.... Kenyans are wielding machetes, clubs with nails, and all sorts of other homemade weapons against Kenyans. Tribal differences seem to be at the heart of all the present violence. Slums and other neighborhoods have become war zones - segregated by tribes. Some are burning people to death as they carry out their ethnic cleansing rampage. Political only on the surface ... deep hatred now controls many as minds are given over to the dark desires of human hearts. Like never before, we at HaMoreh are reminded of our mission to be used by God as instruments of grace and reconciliation. Only love will defeat this hatred. Our labor is in sharing the love of Jesus Christ. Please pray that we will love well over the coming days. Mimi and I pray that the violence will stop. Please join us in praying for the people of Kenya. Beginning last Sunday, Mimi and I have been deluged with desperate e-mails from Kenya and have been talking to many of our loved ones in Kenya by cellular phone. Fuel and food, where available, have skyrocketed in price. Basic commodities are much more expensive than they were a week ago - if they can be found at all. Local economies have shut down. Please join us in praying for the many physical needs of those in peril. Please pray for safety and ultimately, for peace. More than ever, we are committed to bringing help and hope to the precious people of Kenya. They need us now. Will you help? Please join us in giving as our Lord leads you.... Love, Jamie Answer to Prayer

Mimi and I thank you for your prayers for the dear people of Kenya. The violence has abated, and many report to us a sense of cautious hopefulness for a peaceful resolution. The widespread damage done leaves challenges in every area of life for Kenyans. Social, economic, and political failures rip into people's hopes and dreams. The underlying hatred causing the upheaval remains. Thank you for your many expressions of care and concern. Thank you for your giving of resources. HaMoreh has wired over emergency funds to the Kenya Baptist Theological College, its principal, its faculty, and several other dear brothers and sisters as you have provided. Thank you, Lord, for sustaining the church in Kenya. May we be led to walk more closely with our African family of faith over the coming days. Lord, lead us to new and greater ways of bringing help and hope. May we be vessels of your reconciling power! May peace reign in the hearts of the dear people of Kenya.
